Spaces VI • Bass Clarinet
Recorded in a former cattle barn on a farm in Lesno Brdo – a multiple-arched ceiling giving the bass clarinet a rich tonal timbre, with church bells and birds from the village joining in.
Bass clarinet and clarinet, improvised live over two spring days in a small vaulted barn, surrounded by the sounds of village life. Listen to an excerpt here, or hear the whole album on Bandcamp.
Recorded live on 17 and 18 April 2019 in a former cattle barn on a farm in Lesno Brdo, Slovenia. Despite the small room, the multiple-arched ceiling provided a rich tonal timbre that suits the bass clarinet very well.
The village atmosphere – church bells, birds, the occasional tractor or plane – added extra liveliness to the recording and guided the music as well. Apart from the recording crew, there was no audience.
At a very early age, Henry Marić was given a Jew’s harp. Not knowing it was a musical instrument, he simply played with it. The Jew’s harp got lost, but the joy of simply playing with instruments remained.
For the last two decades he has been involved in improvised and experimental music, playing reeds and strings and building various DIY instruments.
Spaces is a collection of in-situ sound and music recordings guided by a simple premise – one performer, one instrument, one space – capturing the synergy between the musician, the space and the music that emerges in acoustically compelling places. Each session unfolds live over a day or two, with no audience and no studio overdubs. By relying on location field recorders and a minimal microphone setup, we bring studio-grade capture into remote, off-grid locations – leaving the sound honest, unprocessed and defined by the space itself.
