Pangea Pangea

Recorded by candlelight in the basement of an abandoned 13th-century castle – pens on paper, creaking floorboards, thrown chairs and a strong wind outside.

Four people behind a table – three of them writing some random insanities, one just sitting there smoking – and the fifth one walking around in the dark, throwing chairs into the walls. Recorded live in a castle basement on a windy November evening. Listen to an excerpt here, or hear the whole album on Bandcamp.

Recorded live in Slovenia on a windy, dark evening, 11 November 2018, inside a deserted castle that dates back to the 13th century, was rebuilt and remodelled several times, and was finally abandoned in the 20th century. It has no electricity and, apart from a nearby house, is quite isolated.

One of the basement rooms, filled with old school furniture, offered a cosy if somewhat gloomy space, with an ambience provided by the strong wind outside, the creaky wooden floor and plenty of cobwebs in the corners.

Headphones, a dark room and a random book by candlelight are recommended.

Pangea Pangea was a group of four, gathered for one windy November evening. Four of them sat at a table in the dark eerie basement, lit by four candles in tall brass candlesticks, each about 1.3 metres high, “borrowed” from the castle’s abandoned church. Marin Ante, a film director and screenwriter, Mirko Logožar, a health coach and nutrition specialist and Veno Mušinovič, a video recordist and engineer, were writing on sheets of paper who knows what, while Jernej Babnik Romaniuk, sound engineer and musician, was simply sitting there, smoking a cigarette.

The fifth, singer-songwriter Primož Vižintin, wandered creepily in the dark around the room as a random person, throwing chairs and other things against the walls for reasons unknown. Pens on paper, a burning cigarette, falling furniture and the wind outside became the soundtrack of the evening. This setup was a recreation of regular beach gatherings on an island in Croatia. Or was it.

Spaces is a collection of in-situ sound and music recordings guided by a simple premise – one performer, one instrument, one space – capturing the synergy between the musician, the space and the music that emerges in acoustically compelling places. Each session unfolds live over a day or two, with no audience and no studio overdubs. By relying on location field recorders and a minimal microphone setup, we bring studio-grade capture into remote, off-grid locations – leaving the sound honest, unprocessed and defined by the space itself.
