Lupus in Fabula
Forgotten treasures of the public domain – travelogues, manuals, fables and illustrations – reprinted as small, hand-bound books.
The Collection
Through literary archaeology and the intellectual recycling of the written word, knowledge, imagination, humour, illustrations, comics, colouring books and manuals, the Lupus in Fabula collection presents a small fragment of the rich Slovenian cultural heritage to the widest possible audience. With careful searching and research, thoughtful selection and considered design, its practical little books aim to bring the richness of past creativity closer to the present.
The inner pages are printed on Favini Alga Carta, a paper made partly from the algae of the Venetian lagoon, and the covers on Cordenons Dali, whose ribbed surface sits nicely in the hand. Both papers carry FSC and ECF environmental certificates. Hand-sewn thread binding makes the books durable and easier to read, and rounded corners keep the covers from curling up in a backpack or bag.

Journey to the North Cape
In the summer of 1899 Ivan Plantan set off from Ljubljana for the northernmost tip of Europe. A year later he published his journey in twelve instalments in the Planinski vestnik magazine, and at the time it was considered the finest Slovenian travelogue.

The White Snake and Other Stories
2021 was the national Jurčič Year, marking 140 years since the death of the first Slovenian novelist. That is why we put together a selection of his shorter stories – some better known, some less – all linked by a fairy-tale thread and masterfully illustrated by Maja Šubic, the well-known illustrator and fresco painter.
We also added two short articles written by Jurčič himself and, as an appendix, Fran Levec’s lovely recollections (1886) and excerpts from Dr. Ivan Prijatelj’s in-depth study (1919).

Ciciban, selected poems
Župančič wrote poetry for children all his life, and with the word Ciciban he named children who are mischievous, curious and cheerful – and sometimes sad and tearful too. His collection Ciciban gathers the poems in which Ciciban is the main hero. For the festive days we chose the most beautiful and best-known ones.
We digitised Nikolaj Pirnat’s original illustrations from 1932 ourselves, carefully cleaned them and prepared them for this edition. We also added a lovely passage by Izidor Cankar from 1911, when he visited Župančič at his home in Ljubljana, and the collection closes with Rajko Ložar’s review of the illustrations from 1932.

Okolo sveta
Around the World
In 1890 Anton Dolenc set off on the warship Saida on a truly inspiring voyage around the world. He published his travel sketches in several instalments in the literary monthly Ljubljanski zvon in 1892.
We furnished the edition with drawings of the time, and the voyage closes with a biographical article by Bogdana Marinac of the Maritime Museum Piran, who also contributed original photographs and a map of the voyage, which we adapted and added to the book as a supplement.
